ImageAwesome Olympic Week
StandardOver 190 children took part in St Martin’s ‘Race for life’ after school on Thursday raising nearly £1000 for cancer research. The children loved it and many surprised us as they dug deep to complete the course – including some of the 4 year olds! This was all part for an effort to promote personal health and fitness during our Olympic Week. The whole school has been immersed in all things Olympian and took part in sports such as judo, fencing, Danish Longball and synchronized swimming – as well as the more traditional sports such as cricket and tennis. A special assembly opened the week when we raised the Olympic flag and lit (very safely of course) the Olympic flame. Throughout the week, staff and specialist sports coaches ran extra sports sessions before, during and after school. The week finished with a parade, an award ceremony and a whole school dance. We hoped to have ignited the children’s interest in this year’s Olympic games in Rio and promoted their love of exercise and sport.
Year 5 Evacuation Day
StandardYear 5 Evacuation Day
Year 5’s history lessons have really caught the children’s interest as they learn about World War II. They have been researching their own questions about life on the island during the occupation and investigating topics such as war time food, living conditions and the German bunkers on the island. During a themed day, the children dressed in 1940 clothes and ‘evacuated’ to St Martin’s Parish Hall to have their passports stamped and to be allocated to their new family. Back at school in the afternoon, a tea party was held to showcase all the pupils’ work and to hear from senior citizens who were involved in the evacuation from Guernsey or were affected by the events of the war. It was wonderful to see the children’s enthralled faces as they listened to real life stories; memories we hope that they will treasure and pass on to the next generation.
